Availability

Some unexpected experiences during my stay at Dodhamb helped me see availability in a new light.

A stranger, invited us home. People would greet, and stop for a conversation as if that was the most important thing to do. A driver insisted on showing us a hot spring that wasn’t on the itinerary. A local teacher took us to meet his guru, a president's award winner. None of it was planned and all of it was worth more than we could have imagined.

What made these moments possible wasn’t luck. It was my availability. Being there when the moment arrived. Present not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally, to receive.

Availability is not about an open calendar or an open door. It is the quality of presence. To enable space for an honest conversation that wasn’t on the agenda. For a person to say something real because the moment felt appropriate. For a connection to form that a structured interaction wouldn’t have allowed.

What becomes possible when a leader is genuinely available is difficult to plan for, because it shows up in the space that planning leaves open.

Availability is the readiness to engage in the moment.
